An Artists Home and Gallery in Rock

The client wanted to achieve an energy efficient home using a fabric first approach.  As the house was intended to showcase the client’s artwork as well as provide a home, it was vital that the design allowed for lots of natural light and ventilation.

Martin was engaged as the main contractor to build this residential dwelling.  The design was very much lead by the client, and Martin worked closely with her to give the house an individual character which was still sympathetic for the locality.  This was achieved externally with Douglas Fir cladding and natural slate, lead detailing to the eaves, a lead ‘belly band’ around the house and lead box gutter detailing.

Thermal Efficiency

Martin and his team at the time took this build over at construction stage and adapted some the construction detailing of the original architects designs to achieve a very thermally efficient building, which has achieved the highest possible EPC rating.  This was achieved by focusing on critical points where buildings are most vulnerable to air leakage such as the roof and windows, to ensure the building surpassed current thermal regulations.

Site Constraints

The site featured a large tree with a Tree Preservation Order, which presented challenges for both design and construction.  This meant that the footprint of the building was limited in size and by location within the plot.

The bespoke elements within the home are a reflection of the artistic personality of the client.  Martins ability to work with this creativity has allowed the house to become something of a work of art in its own right, with stunning finishes and details throughout.  The house has a number of bespoke elements including the following:

A Bespoke Oak Staircase

A prominent feature around which the ground floor revolves, the bespoke design includes inlaid details and recessed book shelves.

An air source heat pump was installed which is powered by solar panels.

Creative Space

A gallery to display artwork and a studio for creating beautiful paintings.
