Future Proofed New Build In Rock

Built in the grounds of their previous home, this spacious new build was designed to welcome the whole family whilst being easy to maintain and comfortable in arrangement to suit a flexible living style.

The Project

The client drew a sketch on the back of an envelope which they presented to Martin at their first concept meeting.  With specific ideas in mind, the client spent a great deal of time with Sprout Development to ensure that the space and layout would work for their lifestyle, and continue to work in years to come as their needs changed.

The Results

Martin lead the design team and very much based his designs on the drawing and brief supplied to him by the client.  With drawings completed and architectural plans agreed, many of the fixtures and fittings were agreed ahead of schedule allowing the clients to take a step back and allow Sprout Developments to forge ahead with the construction phase of the program.

Open Plan Living Space

The open plan living space downstairs works really well.  The two sets of bi-fold doors and roof lights bring natural light flooding into the ground floor, illuminating the open plan living space. The key to the success of this build was ensuring that the client achieved optimal flexibility within the living space to make it work well for their lifestyle.  Martin suggested installing a wide sliding door between the reading room and the hallway which is part of the open plan living space downstairs.  This worked wonderfully for the couple as they were able to section off the living area when needed, and enjoy both open plan and cosy living within the same space.

Design Features

The first thing that strikes you when you entered the house is the dramatic spiral staircase. This staircase sits externally to the main footprint of the house, allowing for more floorspace on both floors.  The staircase was built into the main structure of the house, rather than being installed towards the end.  This meant that build team had easy access to the first floor during the build, which was a huge time-saver, helping the team stay on schedule.  The staircase is lit from above with a stunning skylight, and windows follow the flow of the bespoke curved oak handrail  The extra wide steps are luxuriously carpeted in thick, soft grey and add to the feeling of comfort and opulence.

Future Proofing

With the idea that this was a forever home the house has been designed to grow with the owner.  Should there arise a need to live on the ground floor only, there was a large room which is currently a study with a large bathroom, complete with single level wide walk in shower, ready to transform into a complete ground floor suite.  The extra wide treads on the stair not only contribute to the dramatic impact of the staircase, but will ensure that the stairs are easy to use for as long as possible. Low level PIR lighting in bathrooms provided a soft ambiance but also night time safety. The decking at the front of the house was been recessed into the ground to make it flush with the driveway, so that there were no steps up to the house.

"About 18 months ago we noticed a sign up in our village for Sprout. We spoke to a lady having her house built. She explained Sprout was an architect and builder and she was full of praise. How lucky we have been. Sprout designed and built a superb house and we are particularly pleased with the quality of the finish and how helpful and pleasant all the team have been." Mr Lunt
